Engineered for success.
Adaptive reuse meets modern academic design.
A 90-year-old former dealership gets a 21st century upgrade.
The Cleveland State University School of Engineering’s mission is “to provide a world-class facility that supports an engaged engineering education, graduating ready-to-go engineers who are prepared to solve real-world challenges.” Following an extensive renovation and expansion of the school’s engineering building, CSU can now truly lay claim to a world-class facility that supports this mission.
Originally designed as an automobile dealership, the ninety-year-old structure presented multiple design challenges. The tight, urban site constricted available workspace, while the at-capacity building offered little flexibility to accommodate renovations without disrupting operations. Overcoming these challenges, the completed Master Plan delivers a new, LEED Silver-certified building that epitomizes modern academic design.
As design architect, planner/programmer and MEP engineer HED, in conjunction with CBLH Design, created the Master Plan for CSU’s College of Engineering. With planned renovations to 200,000 square feet of existing space as well as a 32,000 square foot addition, the reimagined structure accommodates the School’s evolving technologies and pedagogical approaches, increases space and upgrades existing spaces, making them more flexible and functional.
